When the Panasonic Lumix GH5 came out last year one of the first things that I did was purchase a cage for the camera. A cage allows you to attach things to the camera that aren’t typically able to be connected to the camera itself. By that I mean physical things like monitors, rails, large lens supports, wireless microphone receivers. You get the idea.
Okay Rewinding to the cage itself. I purchased the original Smallrig cage that they made for the GH5 when it first launched. Now I’ve probably had over 500 comments on my old channel asking me to review the Smallrig cage for the GH5 but honestly, I didnt think there was much to review, until now. Smallrig reached out and sent us their new revised cage that supports the GH5 and GH5S, the Smallrig 2049. Lets check it out.
Plenty of reviewers expressed frustration with the original cage design and suggested things that should have been fixed but for me personally I never really had an issue with the design. As with any new products there are always challenges and things that aren’t quite right but to be honest, I don’t care too much for bashing things on the internet because it never solves anything and it makes you look like a bully.
But what the internet does is also make companies listen and that’s exactly what Smallrig did. Essentially they took an L as the kids would say and decided to redesign the cage from the ground up. Smallrig has always been great at listening to their community and that reason alone is the reason why we chose to work with the companies that we do.
Just to clear this up, before we continue. Yes Smallrig reached out to us and sent us this cage but they did not pay us for a review. They wanted some honest feedback from us because they know that we’ve been using their cages for years.
Smallrig went back to the drawing board and redesigned around 80 percent of what they had before without sacrificing what made the original cage good. Yes I said it, I like the original cage. Anyways. Lets take a closer look and show you both of them.
At the end of the day the improvement is big enough to warrant an upgrade and I definitely recommend this for any GH5 or GH5S shooter. Scratch that. It is a must have for the GH5 and GH5S and that’s why Its being awarded our first ever Gear of approval for must have camera accessories.
