Last week we started our RTX coverage with taking a look at the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce so this week it is MSIs turn. MSI sent over their brand new RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio card so I decided I would put it through its paces and see how it performs.

The MSI card is a lot bigger than the Gigabyte card so lets see how it performs in the exact same GPU test rig and the exact same benchmarks as last week.

Lets talk about how were testing this. Were using our GPU test system with is running the ASUS TUF Z370 Plus Gaming Motherboard with the i7 8700k with 16GB of Gskill trident z clocked at 3200mhz.

This is the exact same system we tested the Gigabyte RTX 2080 and GTX 1080 on last week. The results from those tests are also in this video to give us some context as well.

We ran 3 different benchmarks that all use the GPU in different ways to see what the performance looks like in different situations.

First off lets start with Rise of the tomb raider. We used this because its pretty easy to switch between directx 11 and directx 12 to see what gains or losses could be had with using a different graphics API. All tests were performed with the high preset with 16x anti aliasing with 3 different resolutions. We performed 6 tests in total. The scores were the readouts from the built in benchmarking tool. Just be aware though that these are just benchmarks and might not reflect how well a title will actually run.

For the 1080p test in dx11 we saw the MSI RTX 2080 get an average score of 117fps

Thats around 3 percent faster than the Gigabyte card. However just be aware these differences are with an margin of error.

Onto 1080p in dx12. The MSI RTX 2080 saw an average score of 109fps Thats around 4 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

For the 1440p test in dx11 we saw the MSI RTX 2080 get an average score of 78 fps

That’s around 8 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

Onto 1440p in dx12. The MSI RTX 2080 saw an average score of 73fps.

That’s around 9 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

For the 4K test in dx11 we saw the MSI RTX 2080 get an average score of 36fps

Thats around 13 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

Onto 4K in dx12. The MSI RTX 2080 saw an average score of 38fps.

That’s around 15 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

These gaps in performance can be 1 of many things. The MSI card having more power delivery, superior thermal design and what I suspect as being the true difference, an updated driver. Between this week and last weeks testing the drivers have been updated. Since I don’t have the Gigabyte card here I couldn’t retest with new drivers.

Lets move onto Unigine Superposition. For the super position tests we performed 3 tests in total. We used the 4K optimized preset, 1080p extreme and a custom 1440p test with Depth of field and motion blur turned off.

For the 1440p custom test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve an average framerate of 141 fps

That’s around 3 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

For the 4K Optimized test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve an average framerate of 67 fps

That’s around 3 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

Lastly for superposition we did the 1080p extreme benchmark. Exactly like I mentioned last week. No GPU is safe from this particular test. I hurts everything ever.

For the 1080p extreme test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve an average framerate of 51fps

That’s around 2 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

Last batch of tests is with the Final Fantasy 15 benchmarking tool. This test is a little bit different. This test gives you a score based on the total amount of rendered frames. We performed 3 different tests all on the high preset at 3 resolutions. Im guessing you know the resolutions already.

For the 1080p test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve a final score of 11194

That’s around 5 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

For the 1440p test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve a final score of 8256

That’s around 5 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

For the 4K test we saw the MSI RTX 2080 achieve a final score of 4822

That’s around 4 percent faster than the Gigabyte card.

Based on those results the MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio seems to be a slight bit faster than the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce. I think that the difference is a combination of newer drivers and slightly better power delivery. Im not saying the gigabyte card is flat out worse, I’m saying the Gaming X Trio is slightly better.

I didn’t talk about thermals on purpose. I am saving that for a video for next week where were going to test the Gaming X Trio doing something a little bit different.
